The following month after that arrest was the end of school.  On the very last day, I had one of my students come into my empty classroom.  This guy did decently in my class that year and was on the basketball team.  I assumed he was coming to tell me "Have a good summer" or something along those lines.  What he did say was,

"I've been thinking about this all year, and I think it's time to tell you.  I really think you're The One.  I know I'm young but I gotta plan and I'ma go play ball and get real rich.  Then I'm gonna come back here and marry you.  So don't get a boyfriend between now and then, aight?  Fa real, I get jealous."

I would have burst out laughing if he hadn't looked so serious and vulnerable.  I carefully explained that that could never be, all the while I was thinking how terrible it would look if someone walked in and we were alone in the room while he was proposing.  I maneuvered until we were out in the hall.  At that point I threw in that I really only like to date guys who graduate college (hey, might as well put that goal in his head).  He said he understood and he would wait til he "went pro" so that he could "buy [me] whatever."

It was so adorable!  And awkward.

On a personal note, the college thing really is important to me, yet the last 3 guys I've dated have not even come close to finishing school.  I have the ingrained notion that success starts with a college degree.  Is this not true anymore?  You may be thinking, "are you really stooping so low as to complain about your love life on your school life blog?"  And the answer is yes.
